GOCTA WATERFALL, CHACHAPOYAS CULTURE, KUELAP FORTRESS 5D/4N
The Gocta Waterfall , a perennial waterfall with two drops, has been known for centuries to the local residents in Peru's province of Chachapoyas in Amazonas, which is approximately 700 kilometres (430 mi) to the north-east of Lima and flows into the Cocahuayco river. Its existence was made public following an expedition made in 2005 by a German, Stefan Ziemendorff, with a group of Peruvian explorers. At the time of his discovery he successfully persuaded the Peruvian government to map the falls and to measure their height. On 11 March 2006, following his third expedition to the falls, he held a press conference, the contents of which were published by several of the world's wire services. He stated that the total height was accurately measured at 771 metres (2,530 ft), although this was apparently based on outdated and incomplete information gleaned from the National Geographic Society, which ranked Gocta as the third tallest free-leaping waterfall in the world after Angel Falls in Venezuela and Tugela Falls in South Africa.
Stefan Ziemendorff's inaccurate comments as to the waterfalls' ranking have since been widely disputed. Citing various encyclopedias, reference books, and webpages accessible through Google, Gocta Cataracts are unofficially listed as the world's fifth-tallest, after adding Ramnefjellsfossen (Norway) and Mongefossen (Norway). Furthermore, The World Waterfall Database ranks Gocta as the 14th tallest. (For definitions of waterfalls see also discussion.)
The falls appear to exhibit a modest to high volume of flow, becoming an immensely powerful cataract when its stream is full. Some months ago Gocta was announced as the third tallest and according the list of waterfalls released by a Waterfall database, Gocta is the 14 tallest waterfall in the world.

DAY 04: CHACHAPOYAS – GOCTA
Morning trip to Cocachimba a sleepy town at the end of the road ,where we start a 2.5 hour hike to the Gocta Waterfall . Gocta is the third highest waterfall in the world and is surrounded by high tropical cloud forest, there are good chances to run into monkeys and the Peruvian bird cock of the rock.
Now strangely it is Gocta which has caught the imagination of travellers and we are seeing an increase in tourism due to Gocta and not Kuelap - which is unique in every possible way. When you walk close to the tallest drop it is an awesome experience - the spray blasts you as so much air is pummelled down in bottom of the amphitheater, which encloses the fall. Add to that there is a great section of forest along the way with chances of seeing the endemic yellow-tailed woolly monkey, which only exists in northern-eastern Peru and you have a great day out. Drive to Chachapoyas, overnight at the Hotel Casa Vieja . (B+L)
